Titans claim seventh Dragon Boat title
The Excellence Stores-sponsored team started Dragon Boat in 2006, the same year the sport was introduced to the twin-island republic. The team is made up of 45 members who take part in the sport, both at the competitive and recreational levels.
They also currently hold the record for the 250-metres and 500m race in Trinidad and Tobago.
The competitive group usually participate internationally, having travelled to a number of places including Malaysia, Hong Kong and Canada. They competed in the ninth Club Crew World Championship in Ravenna, Italy in September.
Out of over 100 entrants, Titans made it to the semi-final round and was knocked out just by one-hundredth of a second.
Vice-president of the Titans, Karen Ash, commended the team’s performance at this year’s festival, even though they hardly compete in the small category - which is made up of only ten paddlers.
“The team did well, we usually enter in the big boat category but this year we had to compete in the small boat,” Ash explained.
The team trains eight times a month particularly on weekends.
Marvin Clement, captain of the Titans, thought his team’s performance was okay and is hoping to continue their success. He is also looking for a better performance next year.
“The performance was okay,” he said. “We could do better, but right now we are in a phase where young players coming to meet the older ones and we are just trying to mesh.”
He continued, “next year we are looking for more speed, more power and faster times once the team is meshed.”
“Next year we’re looking for another victory, we are getting back where we were so I know we can win,” he added.
