‘Chan and Rowley does do well’

“CHAN and Rowley does do so well,” said Lyn Sharma, wife of UNC Fyzabad MP Chandresh Sharma, in the wake of her husband’s alleged beating at the hands of the Housing Minister and PNM MP, which allegedly occurred on Wednesday at the Red House. Sharma said she was taking care of her husband, who spent most of yesterday in bed after visiting a doctor early in the morning. Sharma was not available for an interview. A report has been lodged with the police, in which Sharma alleges being physically assaulted in the Red House tea room on Wednesday afternoon. Sharma, it has been reported, claimed Rowley threw a teacup at him in the Parliament’s tea room during a break of a Finance Committee meeting. Sharma also reported to police that Rowley slapped him during a heated verbal exchange. After treatment at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital for high blood pressure, Sharma remained indoors all day yesterday at his Sutton Street home in San Fernando.

He declined to accept telephone calls and did not return text messages. When Newsday visited his home yesterday afternoon, Lyn said her husband had gone to a Nursing Home for a check-up. Lyn said doctors at Port-of-Spain General Hospital found Sharma’s blood pressure was dangerously high and wanted to have him admitted. “But he did not stay and came home late and in a bit of a traumatised state,” Lyn reported. “I’m a bit surprised. Rowley and Sharma I know for a fact, get along very well,” Lyn said. A top official of the Opposition United National Congress told Newsday yesterday Sharma had been directed by the party’s leadership not to speak to the media about the incident until the Speaker of the House Barry Sinanan was officially informed about the incident and the police complete their investigation. Opposition Chief Whip Ganga Singh yesterday said the incident was a matter strictly for the police and the Parliament.
