Joseph triples up at Tobago Open

For the last three years the Tobago Open registered (Curtis) ‘Humphreys’ as the winner of the Men’s singles tournament and it continued but this time it was his youngest brother Alaric Humphreys claiming his first ever senior title. The southpaw battled past the newly number one-ranked Yuvraaj Dookram for the top prize in a match that produced exciting end-to-end action.

“Believe in all things” can be heard loudly after several points from the eventual winner as he sped to an early two-set lead then Dookram fought back to tie it 2-2 but Humphreys held on in the end to become victorious 3-2 (11-9, 12-10, 4-11, 9-11, 11-8).

In the semi-finals round, Humphreys edged the in-form veteran Terry Corbin 3-1 (3-11, 11-7, 14-12, 12- 10) while Dookram beat the seasoned Reeza Burke 3-1 (11-9, 8-11, 11-9, 11-5).

In the Women’s Category, Joseph kept her nerves in the end to narrowly defeat the top ranked Linda Partap- Bodhan 3-2 (13- 11, 6-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11- 9). Both finalist had an easy semi- final round with Partap- Boodhan outclassing Artienea Gregoire 3-0 (11-3, 12- 10, 11-5) and Joseph surpassing her clubmate Chelsea Fong 3-0 (11-4, 12-10, 11-9) After being awarded the triple crown, 18-year-old Joseph declared: “I’m satisfied with my performances because within the last year and a half I had a drought in winning women titles but I’m proud that it has ended by winning these three titles in this tournament”.

She confessed that it is back to the drawing board to improve on her errors to continue her improvement before the next tournament.
