The 2007 Sportswoman of the Year, threw the metal ball 18.29m to win last year but could not produce a similar distance and was tested greatly by Annie Alexander who had to settle for the silver medal with an effort of 16.84m. The University of Tennessee student set the early tempo with heaves crossing 16m but Borel-Brown, who placed 10th at the 28th Olympic Games in Athens, Greece warmed-up to the task producing a golden effort that Alexander could not surpass despite setting a personal best of 17.45m on April 12 earlier this year.

Hilenn James was third with a distance of 13.78m.

Meanwhile, Renny Quow broke the championship record in the Men’s 400m final after being late off the blocks. Quow, the 2006 World Junior 400m champion, quickly found his stride, however, and accelerated to take the lead around the 200m mark. The reigning national champion was the first to hit the bend to the home straight and extended his lead to break Damion Barry’s record of 45.55 seconds set in 2005. Quow crossed the finish line in 45.19 almost 10m ahead of Stan Waithe who was second in 46.75. Zwede Hewitt followed in 46.78.

Grenadian Hazel Regis was crowned the new 400m queen racing to victory in 52.80. Britney St Louis of Phoenix crossed second in 53.20 and Karla Hope was third in 53.70.

And ace distance runner Gavyn Nero completed the double winning the men’s 800m event to add to the gold medal won in the 1500m on day two. Nero beat a star-studded field including CAC silver medallist and Champion-ship record holder Sherridan Kirk, Jamaal James and Jameel Alleyne-Walcott.

Kirk set the early pace with James and Nero trailing but he was unable to sustain the speed as James and Nero challenged him with 200m to go. And with Kirk fading on the home straight Nero made his move to capture the gold in a time of 1:48.45. Kirk held off James to take the silver in 1:48.93 while James followed in 1:49.19.

Also doing the double was Antigua and Barbuda’s Kenricka Francis in the Women’s 3000m event. Francis’ pace was too much for the local runners as she powered home in 10:34.32 to add to her 1500m title won on Saturday. Shermin Lasaldo was second clocking 10:46.33 while Samantha Shukla was third in 11:09.81.

Rondell Sorillo set a new championship record in the Men’s 200m final and in doing so ran an ‘A’ qualifying time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Sorillo of Petrotrin Palo Seco clocked 20.43 to grab the gold just ahead of Rebirth’s Aaron Armstrong who timed 20.48 which was also an ‘A’ Olympic qualifying time.

Cowin Mills took the bronze in 20.84.

Cayman Islands’ Cydonie Mothersill put the local women to shame in the 200m finals blowing away the field in a time of 23.17. Mothersill led from start to finish to win gold ahead of Reyare Thomas who timed 23.54. Nandelle Cameron followed in 24.03

Patricia Sylvester’s golden leap of 13.60m was enough to secure first place in the Women’s Triple Jump ahead of Ayanna Alexander who jumped 13.40m.

There were no medallists in the Women’s High Jump as none of the three competitors were able to clear the first height.
