Veteran newsman John Myers dies at 73
Myers was editor of the Evening News which went out of existence in the wake of the July, 1990 attempted coup. He later became editor of the Sunday Guardian and continued at the Guardian until September 30, 1994. After retiring from the Guardian, he later joined the Bomb weekly as its editor.
While as editor of the Evening News, he was a close friend of the late Police Commissioner Randolph Burroughs.
As a result, Myers was able to produce a front page crime story almost on a daily basis.
Myers was a naturalist, hence it was not unusual for him to keep a couple of snakes, two of which he kept at times, in his office at the Guardian.
During his period at the Guardian, Myers also worked with Therese Mills, Chairman and CEO of Newsday, and John Babb, now Associate Editor, both were instrumental in the launch of Newsday. As such, they both have extended their condolences to the relatives of Myers.
Myers, who was born April 22, 1936, was married twice. His first wife was Gwendolyn, and the second was Dr Ivol Melville Myers, who at one time was Curriculum Co-ordinator at the Ministry of Education. She died in 2007, in Florida.
A funeral service is expected to be held for Myers on Thursday, at Tacarigua.
