Horse racing crown champs at Jetsam Awards

It will be the annual Jetsam Awards ceremony presented by the Arima Race Club which takes place from 7 pm, where champions of horseracing for the 2016 season will be honoured.

From the look of things, the vote should go to Thisonesforron who produced five wins from his nine starts including the prestigious Gold Cup, and being three times runner-up.

His most serious rival will be the threeyear- old Academy Award, winner of four races including the blue riband Trinidad Derby.

Without doubt, the Merlin Samlalsingh- owned Academy Award must be the three-year-old champion.

Set Sail, Cactus Treasure and Battle Cry are the ones in the forefront for the champion two-year-old award.

But the honour should go to the speedy Dave Chadee filly Set Sail.

Swept Away is likely to sweep away the opposition as top fouryear- old.

Ronald “Tiger” Ali will receive his trophy as champion jockey, while veteran Glenn Mendez will collect the champion trainer award.

There will be a new category at the awareds ceremony, the Most Improved Horseman sponsored by the Racehorse Trainers Association, At tonight’s ceremony, Trade and Industry Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon is expected to outline the new Gaming and Betting Act.

And the evening will be completed with the witticism of Paul Keens Douglas who will bring back the old fables of horseracing of yesteryear.

TT U-20 footballers win final warm-up

TT completed their training camp in Cali, Colombia on a winning note on Monday as a 25th minute goal by Noah Powder was enough for a 1-0 victory over Cardoso FC’s Under-20 team in their final training match.

The victory was the team’s second of the fivematch schedule, following a 2-0 win over Club America U-20s on the weekend. In their other matches, TT drew two and lost the other.

The team will be joined in Costa Rica by head of delegation Wayne Cunningham, team doctor Dave Delandro and goalkeeper coach Clayton Ince, who have been named as a replacement for Ross Russell, who returns to TT to join the men’s team technical staff for an forthcoming training camp.

Coach Brian Williams summed up the training camp, saying he was pleased to see the team gathering momentum with victories in their closing two games.

“Generally it was a period well spent over in Cali as we were able to put the players through a proper programme in the lead-up to the tournament in Costa Rica. We had the opportunity to play five training games that were necessary for us and it was pleasing to see the way the team was able to gather momentum and begin to look like a cohesive unit in the final two games, both of which we were able to get victories,” Williams said.

Coach Logie ready for Scorpions test

The Red Force played a number of their matches at the Coolidge Cricket Ground during the preliminary stage. On the other hand, the Scorpions have yet to compete at the ground after playing in Barbados during the preliminary stage.

Speaking ahead of the match Red Force coach Gus Logie said, “we look forward to our semifinal clash against Jamaica. We know how competitive the Jamaicans can be and we are preparing in every way possible for that.” Concerning the familiarity of the ground Logie said, “It is an advantage having played on it before, but I think in today’s world you have players playing in all different conditions.

We believe on both sides there are experienced players who can adjust to different situations and different conditions. I don’t see it as being too much of an advantage, but it is good to know we played on it before and we know what to expect.” The fast bowling duo of Ravi Rampaul and Shannon Gabriel have been on top of their game for the Red Force. Discussing his fast bowling pair Logie said, “Rampaul has been one of the most experienced bowlers in the past, not only for us but for the West Indies. He has shown that despite his experience, despite being in the game for a long time, he can produce the goods when it is necessary.” Logie said despite Gabriel being known for his exploits in the Test arena, he has shown his talent during the tournament. “He is more of a Test bowler, but he is showing that in the ODI (One Day International) game he is a force to be reckoned with, with pace and accuracy. At the end of the day, he will certainly need a little more variation at the end of the innings, but certainly he believes in his pace and he believes in bowling good yorkers at the death and that is what he is going to stick with.” Coach of the Scorpions Robert Samuels, said he expects some tough competition for the remainder of the tournament. Samuels said, “The top four teams are here, regardless of how you look at it you have to beat every team to win a championship. It is championship stage now, the preliminaries are over. I am looking to have two tough days, two excellent games from the oppostion.” The second semifinal tomorrow will feature Barbados Pride and the Leeward Islands Hurricanes, while the final is carded for Saturday – all at the Coolidge Ground.

Calypso shining

Twenty women vied for the title.

While it was a topic, with pictures of varying Newsday headlines floating on multimedia screens, there were not many songs which highlighted the gravity of the situation of women and children in contemporary TT. At the end of it all, the coveted calypso title of National Calypso Queen went to Sasha Ann Moses.

She won with her song, The Main Witness, calling for greater legislation to protect witnesses in TT.

This is the second win of Carnival 2017 for Moses who also won the Stars of Tomorrow competition.

Second place went to Tobagonian Wendy Garrick with her composition Fly Trinbago and third place went to Kerine Williams- Figaro (Tiny) with her piece, End of Days.
